Animals of Africa is a safari-themed casino game located on the UK-based gaming site Microgaming. The game developer is Gold Coin Studios, who are relatively new to the casino gaming scene, with Animals of Africa being their third game since starting up in July 2020.

The music for Animals of Africa is delightful and matches the African theme well. The animations aren’t mind-blowing, but the pictures of the animals in the reels are gorgeous with vibrantly coloured backgrounds, and behind the reels is an orange-yellow sky with birds flying by periodically; it’s quite lovely.

Animals of Africa has five different premium animal symbols: lions, rhinos, zebras, antelopes, and monkeys. These can show up as single or double symbols, with the doubles counting as two animals in one position.
Animals of Africa has 20 fixed pay lines on five reels - each with three rows - with the payout based on the bet placed when patterns of adjacent symbols line up on pay lines. Return to Player rate (RTP) is a pretty reasonable 96.18%, but the volatility is high.
Betting for Animals of Africa ranges from 0.20 to 30.00 credits, which gives plenty of playtime if you want to go low, and larger payouts if your risk tolerance is higher. Max payout is 8,000x the bet. There’s a pay line graphic in the menu that we found helpful.
The special symbols for Animals of Africa include:
- Double - these symbols are part of the premium symbols and have two animals in one position and can be combined with single or double symbols to reward up to 10 of a kind on a single pay line.
- Wild - these appear on all reels and replace any symbol, except for Scatter symbols, to complete or create a winning combination. Five wild symbols on a pay line will pay 1,000x the bet.
- Scatter - This symbol is an African tree, with an exciting if slightly jarring sound effect when it shows up in the first three reels. Having 3, 4, or 5 anywhere on the reels will trigger 12 free spins. If you also land a wild symbol on reels 2, 3, or 4 during any of these free spins, you get up to 3 consecutive expanding wild re-spins that don’t reduce free spins. Extra, extra spins, anyone? The free spins play out on different reels than the base game.
Another cool aspect of the gameplay for Animals of Africa is the chance to double your winnings after any base game or free spins win. It’s a coin toss, where you guess heads or tails, and if you guess correctly, your total winnings are doubled. We played this option with most of our wins and doubled our winnings a satisfying number of times.

We found it took a while to start winning while playing Animals of Africa, which made it feel a bit slow at times. The graphics aren’t anything special, but the game is beautiful, the music is enjoyable, and we liked the ability to double the winnings.
Animals of Africa might not be the most innovative game out there, but it does have a fresh, vibrant look and the opportunity to win some huge payouts.
