Bushi Sushi is the fourth casino game from Gold Coin Studio, which dropped Animals of Africa earlier this year. Gold Coin Studio is based out of Reno, Nevada, and is pretty new to the gaming world, with its first game released in July 2020. All of their games are exclusive to the Microgaming platform.

The main game mechanic on offer in Bushi Sushi is expanding wilds that substitute for all symbols, including the scatter. The graphics of Bushi Sushi are cartoonish and lighthearted, so we’re afraid it won’t curb any actual craving for sushi you might have. The low-pay symbols are the royals, in this case, only jack through ace. The high-pay symbols are four different types of sushi.

The Yin Yang symbol is bright green and red, instead of the usual black and white colour scheme. The animations show the winning symbols being cut in half, presumably with the samurai sushi’s sword. The background is a blurred-out sushi restaurant with a Japanese lantern and swaying bamboo stalks.

During the slot bonus round, everything is on fire, and the music tempo picks up. One downside to this bonus area is the dancing worm character that we think was meant to be a dragon. Maybe the game designers thought it was cute. It’s not.

The music for Bushi Sushi is an expected Asian theme that we didn’t mind at all, and the upbeat version in the bonus round is boppy and fun. Bushi Sushi is a cheerful game, not intended to be taken seriously.

Playing Bushi Sushi

Bushi Sushi scatterBushi Sushi is a 5×3 reel video slot with ten paylines that pay left to right and vice versa, which is unusual. The volatility is low to medium, and the RTP is 96.06%. Gold Coin Studio clearly made Bushi Sushi with the casual, low-risk player in mind.

The betting in Bushi Sushi ranges from 0.10 to 300, so you can wager a larger amount if you’re feeling a little cash-rich. There’s the option to increase your coin size, the number of coins per line, or both. The maximum win is 800x the stake in a single spin.

Bonuses and Features

  • The Bushi Sushi scatter is a Yin Yang symbol. If you land three, four, or five of these on consecutive reels, you’ll win 10, 15, or 20 free spins, respectively. These also pay out up to 10x the stake.
  • Free spins take you to a bonus area that is red-themed, with flames and up-tempo music. We won quite a bit in here, which makes up for the relatively tame base game.
  • The Wild symbol for Bushi Sushi is an adorable sushi samurai that slices through the reel as it expands. If you land wilds on three consecutive reels, they merge to form a large Wild Sushi Samurai image. The Wild can substitute for any symbol, including the Yin Yang bonus symbol, which is unusual and allowed us to pick up free spins a lot more often.

Conclusion

Bushi Sushi wildBushi Sushi is perfect for new players or those who don’t want to play a more high-risk game. The cartoon sushi and animations are fun, if not super original or exciting. The low to medium volatility means that players can get a lot of play for their money, and the ability to choose how to increase your bet is a nice feature.

We were most impressed with the wilds, both how often they land and that they can substitute for the scatters, which significantly increases your opportunity to win free spins. This is an unusual mechanic.

Bushi Sushi is a low-key, easy-to-play cartoon sushi-themed game that doesn’t offer big wins or big losses, and the bonus rounds are a lot of fun. Thankfully they show up fairly often. We think Bushi Sushi is worth trying, especially for newer or low-risk players.
